Cultural planning is important to provide for the cultural life of locals according to Councillor Cameron Price, Chair of the Port Macquarie – Hastings Arts and Cultural Development Committee.
“Local governments play an important role through the development of cultural plans, which identify the needs of the community and the best ways to build the capacity of community-based cultural groups and businesses in the creative industries,” said Cr Price.
The President of the Local Government Association, Cr Genia McCaffery, said per capita ABS data for 2004 and 2005 showed Local Government expenditure on cultural development is above the national average ($44.42) by $1.79, while the State Government contribution is 29 cents below the State and Territories average ($116.61).
"While Local Government continues strong performances in art and culture, State Government contributions are lagging behind,” said Cr McCaffery.
"Cultural activities are important for communities, especially outside the metropolitan areas. They boost the local economy, encourage tourism and contribute to development and equity in our communities.”
The President of the Shires Association, Cr Col Sullivan OAM, said more than two-thirds of NSW's 152 councils have or are developing cultural plans.
"These plans enable local communities to respond to changing social, environmental and economic needs, and identify necessary facilities and services which might be lacking, particularly in rural and regional areas,” said Cr Sullivan.
