Councillors were given 30 minutes notice to attend a meeting where we were informed that our positions had been declared vacant and an Administrator appointed. I felt shell-shocked and dismayed. I was genuinely surprised by the decision, because there was no corruption or any law broken.
Given the Commissioner’s predisposition against Council throughout the Public Inquiry, I expected criticism in the report, perhaps even scathing, however I did expect that the people of Port Macquarie – Hastings would have been given an opportunity for them to pass their judgement on Council’s performance at the election in six months.
I would like to acknowledge the Mayor and the other Councillors for the exemplary community leadership they have demonstrated over the last four years. Even aside from providing a high quality theatre and gallery, many important decisions have been taken this term of Council with substantial community benefit, such as the Link Road and upgrading the airport allowing Virgin to come.
I would like to thank General Manager Bernard Smith and his team of directors for their paramount professionalism and consistent competence and make special mention of Director of Community Development Craig Milburn, who has demonstrated highly proficient project management of the Glasshouse.
The central implication of the dismissal for the community is that there will be no democratic representation for four and a half years. Until September 2012, Port Macquarie – Hastings will be run as an autocracy.
While the position of Councillor was a role I was playing, it is difficult to avoid some attachment. Being elected as a community leader has helped shaped my identity, so it will take some adjustment to let go of that.
When I reflect on my four years as a Councillor, I have no regrets. Looking over the entries I have made on my website cam.com.au I am happy with my contribution during my term on Council.
