Community Care Centre Funding at Risk

Posted by on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 (PST)

Council would like to build a Home and Community Care facility that would house a range of services including dementia care, but needs to be given adequate time to go through a site selection and community consultation process.
Council would like to build a Home and Community Care facility that would house a range of services including dementia care.

People with dementia and others who cannot look after themselves can have short stays giving their carers a break from the 24-hours a day seven days a week responsibility for caring for their elderly or disabled family member.

The facility would also house the Hastings Home Modification and Maintenance Service that put fixtures in homes allowing people to stay at home longer rather than going into a nursing home.

What I would like is for the Department of Disability, Ageing and Home Care to provide a reasonable time frame for Council to prepare a business case to get funding for the facility.

The need for this facility has long been recognised and Port Macquarie – Hastings has been identified by the State government as the preferred location, however Council needs adequate time to find an appropriate site and consult with the community.

While the currently preferred location is a park in the Greenmeadows area, there are concerns about the loss of open space for the residents who live there.

It would be very disappointing if we missed out because we were not given adequate time to go through a site selection and community consultation process.
