I will make an independent submission to the Public Inquiry into the Glasshouse and request an audience with the Commissioner.
The Inquiry has given me an opportunity to reflect upon the series of decisions I have participated in over the last three years that led to the construction of the Glasshouse.
I reviewed the copious documentation on the Glasshouse, which has been the subject of over 60 reports to Council.
I considered the substantial feedback from members of the community who contributed through public meetings, advisory groups and written submissions.
I reread the countless emails and letters I have received, both in support and those that had particular concerns such as the location, cost and parking.
I trawled through the reports from expert consultants that Council had engaged so that we would have at our disposal the very best professional advice available.
I analysed Council’s financial position and the budget for the next three years, during which time Council will spend half a billion dollars providing infrastructure and services for the community.
I scoured every process and decision-point for absolute compliance with good governance, financial probity and personal propriety.
With the benefit of hindsight, knowing what I know now and taking everything into consideration, I would with full confidence still support the Glasshouse in its current location and at the current cost.
Regardless of whether this community’s elected leaders are toppled by a distant Minister, the furore will subside and local people for generations to come will benefit from a high quality gallery and performing arts venue.
